Beyond the single vulnerability.
A Red Team simulates a goal-oriented adversary, combining different techniques to evaluate the overall effectiveness of defenses. The Purple Team transforms evidence into shared learning: attackers and defenders work together to verify telemetry, rules, playbooks and response times.
Possible objectives
- access to a critical application or segment;
- controlled compromise of privileged identities;
- simulation of persistence and lateral movement;
- detection verification on endpoint, network, cloud and identity;
- testing escalations between SOC, IT and management.
Planning
The assignment requires strict rules of engagement: objectives, permitted techniques, informed subjects, data management, time limits and stopping conditions. The intent is not to surprise the organization at any cost, but to obtain a reliable measurement without creating disproportionate risks.
Purple Team Activities
- mapping scenarios to observable techniques and behaviors;
- controlled execution and verification of the telemetry produced;
- tuning of SIEM, EDR/XDR and alert cloud rules;
- updating use cases and response playbooks;
- repetition of tests to verify improvement.
Results
Return includes attack chain, bypassed or effective controls, available visibility, detection times, and improvement opportunities. The main value is to show how people, processes and technologies work together under pressure.
